LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's and women's cross country squads started the season on Friday by placing first through fifth on both the men's and women's side winning the Texas Tech Ruidoso Open held in Ruidoso, N.M.
The Lady Raiders were led by Gladys Kipsang. The senior ran the course in a time of 16:42.24 to win her first race of her career at Tech. Transfers Purity Biwott was second in 17:37.2 and Caroline Karunde followed in third running at time of 17:56.4.
Junior Michelle Guzman continued Tech's sweep with a fourth place finish with an 18:17.1. Coming in fifth with a 19:34.8 was Kaci Westervelt. The Lady Raiders took the dual meet with a score of 15 to 50 over Wayland Baptist.
The Red Raiders equaled the Lady Raiders perfect score as it took the top five spots as well. Tech won the men's team race with a score of 15 to 48.
Junior Gilbert Limo won the men's race in a time of 21:23.3. Cory Higgins followed in a time of 21:37.0 to place second. Silas Kemboi was on Higgin's heels as he ran a 21:46.9 to finish in third. Senior Zach Quinones was fourth running a 21:54.9 and Logan Culotta completed the sweep with a fifth place finish in 21:57.1.
"It was a good start to the season for both squad," head coach Jon Murray said. "It was a fantastic environment to run in."
Tech takes the next week to train and will be back in competition as it host the Texas Tech Open on Fri., Sept. 18 at the Meadowbrook Golf Course.
