Three car accidents within 20 minutes in central Lubbock

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -  A major pile-up on I-27 slowed traffic just before 3:00 p.m. and didn't return to normal until about two hours later.

About 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, a two car collision on the 66th Street overpass over Interstate 27 sent two people to the hospital. One person from each vehicle was transported by EMS with moderate injuries. The cause of this accident is still under investigation.

A police officer called to the scene parked a squad car under the overpass to collect debris. Police say the first wreck created a distraction and a woman with her small child in the car struck the police car. There were no serious injuries.

About ten minutes later, the second accident created a distraction for members of a funeral procession, which led to a third wreck. There were no serious injuries in this accident.

Police then closed off the main lanes of I-27 at the 50th Street exit. The main lanes are now open.
