LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The first physician to perform heart surgery in West Texas has died. Dr. John Selby's career spanned more than 40-years, in which he helped bring West Texas medicine into the modern age.

Dr. Selby served on numerous boards and was active in dozens of civic groups in and around Lubbock, but on Wednesday September 9th, Dr. Selby died from complications of ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease.

Services will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church.  Dr. John Selby, a healer to thousands, was perhaps a friend to just as many, he was 89-years-old.
