LUBBOCK, Texas - One year after finishing last in this same tournament, Texas Tech head coach JoJo Robertson got her new squad off to a solid start for the 2009-10 season as the Lady Raiders claimed fifth place at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic hosted by Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
Overall, the team shot an 870 over three rounds and finished 11 strokes behind the University of Idaho, who claimed the title with a score of 859. Host Colorado State finished second while Louisville and New Mexico finished third and fourth, respectively. Big 12 opponent Baylor ended up in seventh place while Colorado finished ninth.
"This was a good start for the season," said head coach JoJo Robertson. "Today wasn't exactly our day but everyone contributed this week. Three of our players had their first college tournament experience. "We have some things to improve on and are already looking forward to our next tournament."
For the second straight day, it was a freshman who led the squad but this time it was Chilton product Gabby Dominguez. Dominguez had the hot hand for Tech in the final round as she turned in a three-under par (69) to claim seventh place in the event. She entered the final day in a tie for 16th after shooting even par in the first two rounds on Monday.
Kim Kaufman, who paced Tech on day one, finished in a tie for 24th place with teammate Beverly Mendoza. Laura Anderson of Louisville claimed medalist honors with a three-round score of 206 (10-under par).
Texas Tech returns to action on Oct. 5 when they return to Colorado to take part in the Heather Farr Memorial Tournament, hosted by the University of Colorado in Boulder.
