LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A sex offender sweep across Lubbock County leads to 10 arrests and 27 others could face felony charges. NewsChannel 11's Ann Wyatt Little has been following the two day sweep and has more. The joint effort spear headed by the U.S. Marshal's Office has been in the works for nearly two months. Law enforcement officials say they just wanted to make sure sex offenders are in the system and living at their registered address.
Door to door, from sun up to sun down for two days law enforcement was on a mission. "Our main focus is to verify that the address provided by sex offenders was address offender was residing," says Lt. Neal Barron with the Lubbock Police Department and to do that law enforcement agencies worked in teams to verify the addresses of 321 registered sex offenders across the county.
Multiple agencies including the Lubbock Sheriff's Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Lubbock Police Department, Wolfforth Police Department, U.S. Marshal's Office and the Lubbock District Attorney's Office all contributed to the sweep.
"It's very important to verify the location of sex offenders. We can see from recent case in California it's important to keep tabs on those convicted of sex crimes," says Baron.
"The Marshals started planning this two months ago to secure the funds for 41 officers and 5 Marshals to participate in this operation," says Supervisory Deputy Ronnie O'Neal with the U.S. Marshall's Office.
The sweep netted 10 arrests all for various felony charges including failure to register. Six of the 10 arrested were originally charged with aggravated sexual assault of a minor.
Law enforcement wanted to verify email addresses, screen names and employer information on each registered offender. They also took current photographs of each available offender and of their vehicles which will be added to the online sex offender website. "It's always a huge success when you can locate a sex offender and verify their address," adds Baron.
Of the 321 registered sex offenders, eight absconded meaning they just left and did not let law enforcement know their location.
