Study finds binge drinking weakens immune system

By Kristin Beerman | email

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - College students are already more susceptible to the flu, since many drink from the same glass and live in closed quarters, but a new study adds another possible risk, binge drinking.

The study in mice shows that binge drinking can weaken the body's ability to fight off nasty bugs or other illnesses. Researchers at LSU Health Sciences Center have found that drinking a lot of alcohol in one sitting prevents the body from producing proteins that prompt the immune system to fight infection and that weakened immune system appears to last up to 24 hours after the binge drinking.
