Fire near New Deal started out as controlled burn

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A large fire near New Deal started out as a controlled burn Monday night. The Lubbock County Sheriff received a call on a controlled burn around 7 p.m. which was about 20-minutes before the fire department was called out.

The fire charred some acreage and a barn with horses inside. As many as five horses narrowly escaped the flames, but were rescued and are now safe. It took at least four fire departments including New Deal, Abernathy, Shallowater, and Carlisle to battle the blaze and protect the horses.

As the investigation into the fire continues, NewsChannel 11 will bring you updates as they become available.
