Food for Thought Report 2.6

This week, inspectors checked out a whopping 73 city and county kitchens. We have one low performer this time, and a trio of top performers to tempt your taste buds.

We start with our featured top performer, it's been a Broadway fixture since 1976, and this week, they're serving up excellence with a perfect score. It's 'home sweet restaurant' at Gardski's at 2009 Broadway, they're in the house this week with a perfect score, making them a Food for Thought Top Performer. Nestled in an historic Lubbock home, and with a variety of menu items, the staff here strives to serve good food in a friendly and safe atmosphere and General Manager Bill Crafton says his team is able to get it right because of some great teachers. "The health department does as much about teaching and giving us the right experience so that the customers can come in and they can feel confident that they can have an enjoyable dinner."

Also on the Top Performing list is Frulatti Cafe' inside South Plains Mall at 6002 Slide Road, they are a real peach this time, with zero critical violations.

Also Chicken Express at 4702 4th St. is also flying high this time, as a Food for Thought Top Performer.

Now on to this week's only Low Performer. Santa Fe at 5028 50th St. gets four critical violations. Violations found include:

  • Beans not being cooled to 41 degrees within the required time limit.
  • A date marking system was not being used.
  • The dish washing sanitizing was not found at a rate of at least 50 ppm's.
  • Dirty dishes were being stored next to clean dishes, and some clean dishes showed evidence of food residue.

Other violations included no chemical test kit to monitor sanitizer levels, a steam table was being used to heat food and a beverage gun holster was soiled.

The Manager at Santa Fe told NewsChannel 11 all violations were corrected on site, with the exception of the problem with the dish washer. He said that violations required repair work, and has now been taken care of.
