Remembering the Past and Marching Toward the Future

With posters and a strong voice .. Hundreds of Texas Tech students marched across campus to Memorial Circle with *one* message in mind. "Black History Month is for all of us it's not only about one race it's about everyone's history," said one of the marchers. "We need to come together no matter what our race is to support each other as well as our university," says another student.

Students say Friday's march is a reflection of history, a day to remember the efforts of civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. One student tries to paraphrase his famous quote," He said you must stand for something or you will fall for anything.' This is what we're doing we're standing for something."

Former Texas Tech graduates reflected on the changes over the past 30 years. "When we started out we did observe Black History Day, then it was Black History Week and now it's Black History Month."

But other students say Black History should be celebrated more than just one month a year. "We have to keep this energy up to make any kind of progress cause when you think its going good there's always that little something. We are all people and we're just celebrating our heritage."

In honor of Black History Month, the Black Faculty and Staff Association will host several events throughout February.
