Lady Texan Rodeo Places Second at Sul Ross

ALPINE, Texas - The South Plains College Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams competed at Sul Ross State University this past weekend and had another great rodeo with eight top 10 performances and a second place team finish for the Lady Texans.

Brittany Bell started the Lady Texans off on the right note with a first place finish in the long round of the goat tying competition, completing the event in 7.30 seconds, earning 60 points and $396.80. In the short round, Bell finished tied for fourth with a time of 8.10 seconds for a combined time of 15.4 seconds and an average of 50 points, good for second place overall. For her efforts, Bell earned $768.80. Schelli White finished ninth in the event after a long round time of 8.8 seconds and a short round time of 9.5 seconds.

In barrel racing, Haley Nelson sped out to a long round time of 17.21 seconds, second fastest of the round. Nelson then completed the short round in 17.4 seconds to finish fourth in the round and third overall. Clara McBane finished eighth overall after times of 17.45 seconds in the long round and 22.48 seconds in the short round.

Carley Richardson and Tally Owens were both part of a three way tie for third place after completing the long round of breakaway roping in 2.8 seconds. Richardson then turned in the second fastest time in the short round, 3.2 seconds, to finish third overall in the competition. Unfortunately Owens struggled in the short round with a time of 12.7 seconds to finish seventh overall.

In the men's competition SPC's Jeremy Buhler teamed up with Texas Tech's Jay Manning in the team roping event and the duo recorded a time of 7.2 seconds after the long round, setting them in fifth place. They then dominated the long round, posting a time of 7.8 seconds and barely missed the overall championship with a combined time of 15 seconds. Jake Cobb (Weatherford) and Nick Rawless (Tarleton) earned a combined time of 14.8 seconds to edge out Buhler and Manning.

After struggling to a first round time of 11.2 seconds in steer wrestling, Ben Ramey had the fourth best time of the short round, finishing in 8.2 seconds. His combined time of 19.4 seconds was good enough for a third place finish overall.

The Texan and Lady Texan rodeo teams next compete at Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas on October 1-3, 2009.
