LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Thursday morning's stabbing claims the lives of two, injures a third and lands one man behind bars. Twenty-seven-year-old Jessica Hernandez and 28-year-old Rudy Vela were pronounced dead at the scene. Within minutes, police arrested 27-year-old Ruben Garcia. He is in the Lubbock County Jail charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
Police continue to investigate the deaths of the 11th and 12th homicide victims in Lubbock this year.
Rudy Vela's house is empty and family members moved all the belongings out this afternoon saying there are too many memories they just don't want to think about after losing their loved one.
Three chilling 911 calls paint a picture of a chaotic scene this morning inside this house and on these streets.
Operator: 911 what's your emergency
Caller 1: We had a stabbing on 64th.
Caller 2: There's been a stabbing and some dudes going crazy.
Caller 1: He's still in front of house still with a knife chasing everyone.
The calls came from people hiding inside their cars.
Caller 1: He's running around with a knife don't get too close.
"When the officers arrived to a scene of chaos," says Captain Greg Stevens with the Lubbock Police Department. Moments later a 911 call reveals the man with the knife ran outside.
Caller 1: He's outside he has blood all over him.
Police say that man is 27-year-old Ruben Garcia. They found Garcia walking two blocks east of the crime scene, intoxicated shortly after the call out. He is behind bars and faces two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
"They found three victims had been stabbed, two of which deceased at the scene," says Cpt. Stevens.
Twenty-seven-year-old Jessica Hernandez and 28-year-old Rudy Vela were killed. The third victim, Rachael Diaz, was taken to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Detectives say Hernandez was trying to move others out of harm's way when she was stabbed.
"Alcohol was involved. It was late into the evening and tempers flared and it got out of hand," adds Cpt. Stevens.
Police say Garcia and Vela were friends and were at a pool tournament before the stabbing where an altercation broke out between the two friends. The argument carried on back at Vela's house where 10-15 people had gathered for what was supposed to be a fun party.
"There was a second altercation the suspect felt he had been disrespected or something. He pulled out a knife and stabbed three victims," says Cpt. Stevens. Police say the second argument was over a bottle of gin.
Both families are mourning the loss of their loved ones while detectives continue to process the evidence they spent over eight hours collecting. They hope to present a case to the District Attorney's Office sometime in the next few days.
