LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - We are learning more about the two victims who were killed and about the person charged with their murders.
Ruben Garcia, 27, remains in the Lubbock County Jail charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. It all happened early Thursday morning in the 2000 block of 64th Street.
Jessica Hernandez, 27, and Rudy Vela, 28, were pronounced dead at the scene. The third victim, Rachael Diaz, was taken to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Now we are learning the two deceased victims were related - Rudy Vela was Jessica Hernandez's brother in law. We are told by a family member that the man charged with these murders was also a very close family friend. "You would think of him protecting her and hurting her the way he did and making her fight for her life the way she did," said Hernandez's cousin Jacyclyn Martinez. Martinez also called Vela a friend.
Lubbock Police say both were stabbed to death early Thursday morning by Garcia, also a mutual friend. Martinez says she was in disbelief to hear it was Garcia who killed her cousin. "They were always together and he was just a happy go lucky guy all the time, that's why it's so shocking, we just don't know what caused it what sparked it," said Martinez.
Martinez says a group of about 15 people always got together at Vela's house; they all considered each other family. "Everybody is kind of making this out to be a party that went wrong with everybody drinking, but that's not the case because that's not the kind of people that these people were," said Martinez.
Martinez remembers her cousin as a loving mother who worked very hard to raise her children. "Jessica was the best person you would ever want to know. She was funny, she was extremely smart. She loved her kids, she was a single mom with three kids," said Martinez.
Martinez says Vela will also be greatly missed. "Rudy was a great guy. He has a beautiful 9-year-old girl who lost her daddy and her daddy was her whole world," said Martinez.
Martinez says she may never know what happened Thursday morning, but it will affect her and her family forever. "It's just absolutely disgusting how you think someone is a friend and they can turn on you, make you fight for your life and make three kids not have a mother," said Martinez.
There has been a memorial fund set up in honor of Jessica Hernandez. You can donate at Western Bank on 82nd Street. The family tells us the money will go to help her three children.
