LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The food is at the top of the attractions at the fair. There are all kinds of treats here, and yes, a lot of them are fried. So, have you ever wondered where all the leftover grease goes once the fair is over?
Fried this, and fried that. Anyone that goes to the fair can get anything fried, but you know what that means, where there's something fried- there's some grease that needs to be dealt with.
South Plains Fair General Manager Herb Higgs says "There's a lot of cooking oil used for every corn dog and chicken on a stick you named fried thing and it has to be with oil. It has to be changed periodically and there's a lot that goes off this lot."
What do they do with all that oil after it's used? "We obviously don't dump grease down the City sewers. We have a service that comes put grease containers on the fairgrounds where the vendors are instructed to take," says Higgs.
The grease is then processed, and recycled. But some of the stands don't dump their grease like everyone else. "All our waste oil goes to a gentleman who makes biodiesels, it's kind of his hobby," says Rick Tate with Shriners corndogs.
They're not the only vendors that take this route. "Some gentleman asked if we'd be willing to have it recycled so that what we're doing. Giving it to them so they can recycle it," adds Phillip Salas who specializes in funnel cakes. Salas's funnel cake stand goes through 45 gallons of oil, but he says, "I think they are in the process of doing research to turn it into diesel fuel,".
So you can rest assured next time you eat one of the many fried things at the fair the oil won't be wasted and will be recycled.
