LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Dementia is not a normal part of aging.  On our news at five, Dr. Sid O'Bryant, a neuropsychologist at the Texas Tech Health Science Center said aging is not the only trigger for Alzheimer's disease, so there is much we can do to prevent it.

"A lot of things that you do that are related to your heart in midlife increase your risk for dementia in late life.  Things like obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, lack of activity, physical activity," said Dr. O'Bryant.

TTUHSC is one of four sites in Texas enrolling people in the Texas Alzheimer's Research Project.  You must be over 50 to enroll and participants may or may not be showing signs of dementia, but each will be paid $100 for their time.  For more information please call 743-1575.
