LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - NewsChannel 11 is learning more about the victims of a tragic accident Monday. A tire blew out on a cotton module truck causing it to cross into oncoming traffic near Springlake. The truck collided head on with an SUV and both vehicles caught fire.
NewsChannel 11 has received numerous phone calls from friends and family saying that Tammy Jackson and her teenage daughter Rexee were in the SUV. DPS has not confirmed this. They did release the name of the truck driver, 33-year-old Raymond Ramirez Jr. of Olton who died at UMC.
The community of Springlake and Earth mourns the sudden loss of a mother and her teenage daughter.
Springlake-Earth School Superintendent Denver Crum says the accident's youngest victim freshman Rexee Jackson was full of life, a life that ended tragically too soon.
"It's devastating. The last thing you expect is that phone call," says Crum. The phones kept ringing. News of Rexee and Tammy Jackson's death shocked the communities of Springlake and Earth Monday. "She was a high school freshman and a beautiful and vibrant young lady. The type of kid that others gravitate towards," adds Crum about the loss of one of his students.
Monday was a school holiday and within hours of the accident nearly 50 people gathered in the high school gym to pray. Crum says she was just one of those kids everybody liked. A wolverine since kindergarten, Crum says you could find Rexee front and center with the varsity cheerleaders rooting on the football team, shooting a basketball, running with the cross country team or on the homecoming court.
Crum says the freshman would want her teachers and friends to remember all the good memories. "She wants to laugh and wouldn't want them to grieve. I think that's how she would want it," says Crum about the difficult time his students are going through.
The mother and daughter's life will be celebrated in the school's 900 seat auditorium where standing room only is expected. The two will be buried together Friday. Crum says the hall just won't be the same. "When you lose a person like that...there aren't many like Rexee Jackson, she'll be hard to replace," adds Crum.
School will dismiss early Friday at noon for the funeral at 2 p.m. in the auditorium which is the largest place to gather in the community. Just down the road, the community of Olton will celebrate the life of 33-year-old Raymond Ramirez Jr. His funeral is Friday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Olton.
