LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - As Lubbock County continues to build its new detention center, leaders learn more about moving mentally ill inmates to treatment facilities.
Counties across the country have seen a high number of mentally ill people processed through the criminal justice system, instead of receiving proper health services. Recently, the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office took part in a forum to explore effective ways to divert mentally ill inmates to treatment facilities.
Supporters say these programs are more humane and cost efficient ways to address the problem.
