Family mourns the loss of 21-year-old daughter

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Plainvew family is mourning the loss of their 21-year-old daughter after she was killed in a head-on collision.

DPS Troopers say a pickup truck driven by Jimmy Scott Barnhill of Midland, was headed the wrong way on I-27, just south of Hale Center, around 3:50 a.m. Sunday morning.

They believe Barnhill was drinking, but are waiting on blood alcohol tests to confirm.

The truck hit an SUV head on, killing the driver, 21-year-old Ashleah Richards.

Richards was taking a semester off from Wayland Baptist University and the four other women in her vehicle were current Wayland students. They suffered minor injuries.

A close friend of Richards, Leah Flores says, "I've never met anybody like her. She was a caring person just full of life and she loved life in every aspect and it's just not fair.

The man driving the truck was hospitalized with moderate injuries and charges against him are pending.

Coming up on NewsChannel 11 at 6 and 10, family and friends speak out about the importance of not drinking and driving.
