LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - NewsChannel 11 has learned that a former Lockney police officer is on trial.

Former patrolman Brandon Welty started work for the police department on November 1st of 2008.  According to a grand jury indictment, he possessed child pornography and committed sexual assault at just about the same time as he was hired.

A newspaper article in the Floyd County Hesperian Beacon indicates Welty was trained in law enforcement at South Plains Police Academy.

NewsChannel 11 was able to confirm from the District Clerk's office that the trial started this week and is expected to wrap up on Wednesday.

A call to the Floyd County District Attorney's office has not yet been returned.

* KCBD.com reported that Welty and his wife moved to Lockney from the South Plains town of Meadow.  However, after further research, we have learned that Welty had not given up his Terry County residence at the time of his arrest and it has been reported that he split his time between Terry and Floyd Counties.
