LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - NewsChannel 11 has confirmed that Ford is closing a dealership in Slaton. According to the owner, it won't be closed for long.
Annette Sykora, the owner of Smith South Plains, confirms that the dealership will lose the Ford Brand. Sykora is the immediate past chair of the National Auto Dealers Association. During her term as chair, she lobbied Congress and the U.S. public in favor of providing a bailout program for troubled U.S. auto dealers, which led to the popular Cash for Clunkers program.
Sykora says Ford is re-evaluating how many dealerships it can have nationwide. So far, the dealership in Slaton is the only one within a close drive of Lubbock to get this bad news.
She does say to Ford's credit, the company was humane about it and approached her dealership one-on-one with the bad news, rather than doing a mass cutback of dealerships.
Sykora plans to reopen as a different brand or possibly a different concept. These changes will happen at or before the new year.
By the way, this only affects her Slaton dealership, and not Smith South Plains of Levelland.
