Texas soldier killed while home on leave

BLUM, Texas (AP) - A West Texas woman faces manslaughter charges in the weekend shooting death of an Army soldier on leave from Iraq. The woman told authorities she thought the gun was a toy when she aimed it at 20-year-old Pvt. Cody Ryan Patteson and pulled the trigger.

Hill County Sheriff Jeffrey Lyons said 20-year-old Pvt. Cody Ryan Patterson suffered an apparent gunshot wound to his chest at a home in Blum, located about 40 miles north of Waco. He was pronounced dead early Saturday morning.

A Hill County jail spokesman says April Thompson, of Odessa, was charged with manslaughter Sunday after she was arrested in Glen Rose, located about 30 miles west of Blum.

Her bond was set at $125,000. It wasn't clear whether she had an attorney.
