Scary Halloween contacts are illegal without a prescription

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Halloween is just around the corner and you may be looking into costume contact lenses to provide the final touch putting stars in your eyes, or the cat eye look for a complete white-out. It is important to know that unless you already wear contacts and unless you have a prescription to try those artsy lenses, you could be in big trouble buying, or borrowing costume lenses.

"The potential risks range from infections to more serious problems, like corneal abrasions or corneal lacerations - which need immediate medical attention," said Dr. Chad East, an optometrist.  "The major concern with these lenses is that there are a lot of places around town - hair shops, beauty supply places that sell these lenses and it's actually illegal to purchase these lenses without a prescription."

A pair of costume lenses typically costs between $40 and $50 and again, if you can buy them without a prescription, they are being sold illegally.
