LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Forty-six states are now reporting widespread cases of the flu. The only states not hit as hard are Connecticut, New Jersey, South Carolina and Hawaii. Last week alone, there were 90 confirmed swine flu deaths in the country, the highest number on record so far this season. In many places demand for the vaccine is far greater than the supply. Public health officials from the Centers for Disease Control say production is nowhere near where they had hoped it'd be by now.
"We are doing everything we can to get vaccine out as soon as it becomes available. Shipping is overnight. We're distributing to literally tens of thousands of doctors, hospitals, health centers throughout the country," said Tom Frieden, M.D., and Director of the CDC.
As of Friday, more than 16 million doses of the H1N1 vaccine were available and more than 11 million have been shipped.
