Man claiming to be sheriff threatens Tech fans with tickets

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Someone claiming to be the Armstrong County Sheriff says he will write anyone a traffic ticket just for having a Texas Tech sticker on their car.

The claims showed up last week on the Internet.

KFDA Television in Amarillo contacted Sheriff J.R. Walker who denied involvement.

As a matter of fact, Sheriff Walker told KFDA that if he finds how who's behind the threat, he would be interested in pressing charges.

While Walker did not want to go on camera, the prosecutor for nearby Randall County did.

He says a new law 33.07 makes it illegal to impersonate an official on the Internet.

"This 3307. Specifically is online harassment. That's the whole point. And.....this appears to me to be close," says James Farren the Randall County District Attorney.

This new law took effect on September 1st.
