LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Monday NewsChannel 11 broke news that Lubbock is approaching a billion dollars of debt; and we doubled the debt load in the last three years.
That story further justifies why I'm voting against the streets portion of the city bond election. It is the most expensive item with the least benefit and I won't vote for more debt for 34th Street.
But consider this; I'll be voting for new soccer fields for one obvious reason. New soccer facilities will benefit every taxpayer in Lubbock.
The money coming into our hotels, restaurants and stores on tournament weekends will more than cover the $9 million investment in just a short time. The long term economic benefits make a "for" vote, a no brainer. Even Lubbock's own tourism research said soccer is the very best return on investment for taxpayers.
I will also be voting for the new fire station because a fast response time will save lives and lower our city insurance rates.
