LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The Food and Drug Administration has announced plans to ban sales of raw oysters harvested from the Gulf of Mexico unless treated to destroy potentially deadly bacteria.
The FDA is asking all oyster producers institute a new sterilization technology by 2011. Oyster processors say the new requirements could double or even triple the cost of oysters. The Gulf of Mexico supplies about two-thirds of oysters that are consumed in the United States.
