Updated: City to purchase Lubbock's Xcel Energy

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Officials have announced that the City of Lubbock is purchasing Xcel Energy's Lubbock business.

LP&L and Xcel Energy are the city's two main energy providers.

Today's announcement would essentially eliminate LP&L's competition. This deal includes the City's purchase of all of Xcel's power lines and substations serving the city.

NewsChannel 11 is told the Xcel office located in downtown Lubbock will be closed. The building will be donated to Texas Tech University.
