Abuse of Adderall reaches a new epidemic

By Kristin Beerman | email

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Abuse of the prescription ADHD drug "Adderall" has reached epidemic proportions. Apparently, college students are buying it from friends, either to help them study, or to control their weight. Since many are taking what has not been prescribed to them, Dr. Michael Brennan says an even bigger problem is that many students are taking more than the intended dose, which could put them in serious danger.

"People who take Adderall in large doses, higher than normal doses, in an attempt to lose weight, may actually make themselves psychotic," says Michael Brennan, M.D., a psychiatrist. Dr. Brennan says parents should tell their students that Adderall abuse can make someone violent, or send them into panic attacks, boost hypertension and ultimately bring on severe fatigue and depression.
