Students remember Seagraves senior Alex Brown

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) –  Two South Plains communities are mourning the loss of Seagraves High School Senior Alex Brown. She left her home in Wellman for school Tuesday morning but never arrived.

DPS troopers say Brown was traveling on Old Seagraves Road sometime between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Old Seagraves Road runs parallel to Highway 62/82, and is hidden from the Highway.

When Alex's mom, a teacher at the high school, learned her daughter was not in class for second period she left to retrace her daughter's drive to school. That's when she found her truck and called 911 just before 10 a.m. DPS says the truck skidded for 300 feet and flipped. The accident is still under investigation. It is unclear whether fog or speed played a role.

AeroCare took Brown to University Medical Center where she died. Troopers say the teen was not wearing a seatbelt.

Monday morning’s accident shocked the town of 2,300 and those who knew Alex Brown. You've probably seen her whether you know it or not if you've been to a Seagraves Eagles game. Brown was the Seagraves Eagle student mascot.

Students and teachers are remembering her spirit and smile. "It happened so quickly, so suddenly and unexpectedly," said Seagraves High School Principal Joel Haragan. He had to tell his students Alex Brown was in a better place. There was not a dry eye in the school gym.

“Everyone wants to know why this happened,” said Haragan to his students. He was trying to make sense of the senseless. He told his students that they had to come together and unite, and that's what they did.

“I say we get down there hold hands and pray,” said Freshman Alexander Medina. Following his lead, students left their seats for the gym floor.

Hand by hand, 150 students stood on the same floor Brown could be found running up and down. They prayed for her and her family. “The good Lord is going to get us through this,” said Haragan.

Some began to sing the lyrics to Amazing Grace. Haragan said Alex wasn't bashful about talking about her walk with the Lord at all. “She lived her life in such a way that she was looked up to by kids and teachers,” added Haragan.

The 17-year-old sang soprano and was involved in FFA. She played on the basketball team and the straight A student was working to become valedictorian of her class.

Her friends left the gym Tuesday with heavy hearts. “I think she would want more of a celebration than sad tears,” said Haragan. Through the ears her classmates wasted no time in honoring Alex.

Principal Haragan says there will be a hole and that Alex will always be an Eagle. “I know she's seen the light and she doesn’t want to come back,” said Haragan.

Principal Haragan reminded his students to drive safely and buckle up. Students decided they will dedicate the year book to Alex. They will all be wearing button pins with her picture on it to school.

Counselors will be on hand for those students who need them.
