Lady Chaps Sweep Pioneers 3-0

PLAINVIEW, TX - No. 20 Lubbock Christian University had to rely on a pair of comeback rallies to defeat Wayland Baptist University 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 29-27) Tuesday night to close out the regular season at Hutcherson Center.  With the completion of the match, the seeds are now set for the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament, which begins Friday at Rip Griffin Center on the LCU campus.

In the opening set, LCU fought back from an 18-14 deficit with a 5-1 run to tie the score at 19-19.  They would need another run in the set, as Wayland built a 22-19 lead before the Lady Chaparrals closed the set on a 6-1 run to steal the set 25-23.  Kelsey Odell had three kills for the Lady Chaps during the set-clinching 6-1 run. LCU never trailed in the second set, but the set was tied late at 18-18 before LCU closed out the set with a 7-2 run for the 25-20 set win.

Wayland Baptist had their chances in the third set but they just could not get the set-point when they needed the most.  They led the set 23-21 and had set point at 24-23, but a kill by Odell tied the set at 24-24.  They were also unable to clinch with set-point serve at 25-24 and 26-25, as Elissa Loynes and Bailey Jones each had kills to tie the match.  An ace by Jordan Goings set up LCU with a 27-26 lead and match point, but Wayland Baptist tied the set with a kill by Jennifer Wyatt.  Melissa Green eventually put the match away for LCU with a pair of kills for the 29-27 match clinching set win.

LCU's attack numbers were below average, as they produced a .171 kill percentage. They were plagued with nine attack errors in the opening set and 12 in the third set.  They did receive a double-double from Odell, who had 11 kills and ten digs.  LCU's Elissa Loynes had a match-high 14 kills and Bailey Jones registered 13 kills. Loynes also had four blocks. Jordan Goings produced a three-set career high in assists with 46.

Lubbock Christian closes the regular season with a record of 24-5 and 13-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.  They will serve as the No.1 seed in the SAC Tournament and will play in Friday's 4:30 contest against the winner of the 11:30 a.m. match between No.4 Southern Nazarene and No.5 Wayland Baptist. Friday's middle match (2 p.m.) will see No.2 Oklahoma City University face No.3 Oklahoma Baptist.  The SAC Tournament championship match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, with the winner receiving the SAC's only automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship.  All games in the SAC Tournament can be viewed online through www.lcuchaps.com and live scoring is also planned for each match.
