LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Because it's November 11th, or 11-11, NewsChannel 11 decided to take a closer look at what numerologists call a powerful number. From ancient numerology to the present day, the significance of the number 11 has changed, but it's always had a reputation for pushing the limits.
Some people think the number 11 is shrouded in conspiracy. "The topic for this program is the mystical meaning of the numbers 4-4-4 and 11-11," said one Internet documentary. Others make a wish when they see 11:11 on a clock.
According to Texas Tech Assistant Professor of Classics, Jason Banta, the mystery of the number 11 goes all the way back to ancient Greece and Pathagoras. "He was interested in numbers as a way of looking at the universe," said Banta. Pathagoras separated numbers into groups of 10. Being 1 more than his first group he saw 11 as a powerful force, which represented taking the next step. "10 represent the universe. It's everything put together. 1 represents the sorts of powers that start and create the universe. So, 11 was this great combination of this very creative force and the universe itself," said Banta.
It also had significance in early Christianity pushing the limits in a different way. "When we come to a little bit later period, 11 has kind of a shady history for a little while. In early Christianity it was a problematic number because it was one more than the 10 commandments, so it was something about transgression," said Banta.
Today, Banta says the numerology has seen resurgence, and 11 is often associated with the reporter, "11 often represents the broadcaster, the observer, the watcher."
He also says he's seen documented studies by modern numerologists who have a theory that people will see the time 11:11 more often than any other time when they look at a digital clock, and they believe this is no coincidence. "People who are really interested in modern numerology say it marks some sort of transitional period that something is going to change soon when you see this. Often people are looking and the number 11 as some sort of transitory moment," said Banta.
Other 11 theories online deal with September 11th, and some believe there will be a cataclysmic event on December 21, 2012 at 11:11 GMT, or Greenwich Mean Time, when the Mayan Calendar ends.
