LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Topping the menu this week is a newcomer to not only the Food for Thought list but also to Lubbock.
"Feels great! Feels really great to get a 100 on our inspection," said owner Justin Barnard.
Located at 6012 82nd, West Crust Artisan Pizza has only been open for about three weeks, and already it's getting rave reviews from both the Lubbock Health Department and customers.
"We are a gourmet pizza shop - West Coast themed. It's a really simple concept. We just make pizza: one size, all thin crust, extraordinary toppings – really, really good stuff. We've been having a lot of people remark that it's the best pizza they've ever had in their life - which I didn't expect," Justin said.
Here's something you might not expect - pizza with a healthy concept. "We don't have any sugar in the crust or in the sauce, and we watch really our Ps and Qs with fats and stuff like that. We cut that stuff down. We have a gluten-free pizza. It's the only one in Lubbock, apparently," Justin said.
Justin says he wanted to bring that idea along with the West Coast feel to West Texas and give Lubbock its own local gourmet pizza shop. "We like to eat gourmet pizza. We are into local efforts that are locally funded, locally birthed, and we care that they're environmentally responsible," he said.
Besides serving up the perfect "pie" as it's called at West Crust, the other goal is keeping clean - which Justin says takes a team effort. "Man, we try hard. We have meetings with our staff and go over the health code as it pertains to our establishment here," he said.
