LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Thursday is the Great American Smokeout, when smokers are asked to try to give up cigarettes for just one day and hopefully, the effort will last a lifetime.

The American Cancer Society suggests these tips on quitting on Thursday:

  • Hide your cigarettes, lighters or ash trays.
  • Change your daily routine.
  • Drink lots of liquid.
  • Keep plenty of gum handy.
  • Find something to keep your hands busy.
  • And most of all, arrange a support group, at least a friend you can call when you feel the urge to smoke.

Representatives will be at these locations Thursday with more to help you get through the day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.:

  • Amigos on North University Ave.
  • Wal-Mart at 4th St. and Frankford Ave.
  • United at 50th St. and Avenue Q.
  • United on Parkway Drive
