Senator Duncan Files Legislation Targeting SPAM E-mail

Senator Robert Duncan (R-Lubbock), has filed "Senate Bill 698" with House Bill 1282, from Representative Brian McCall (R-Plano), to minimize unsolicited commercial e-mail, which is commonly known as SPAM.

"It's time to can SPAM," Duncan said. "The proliferation of adult-oriented SPAM in recent years has made it clear the Legislature needs to act. Not only are these messages a nuisance, but they assault Texans' morality."

McCall said he is concerned about the privacy issues surrounding unsolicited e-mails. "I, like many Texans, do not believe we must sift through our e-mail accounts so that unscrupulous actors can continue to send unwanted, unsolicited e-mails," McCall said.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott supports the work of these lawmakers to reduce unsolicited electronic mail received by Texas consumers.

"The legislation will help my office better serve the consumers of Texas who are barraged by unsolicited and unwanted e-mail," he said.

The legislation is also supported by industry leaders, including the American Electronics Association.
