LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Government safety regulators say more than 2 million drop-side cribs by Stork Craft manufacturing are under recall, the biggest crib recall in U.S. history. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says they are sold under several brand names, but nearly 150,000 of the cribs on recall carry the Fisher-Price logo.
The agency is aware of four deaths of young children who suffocated in the cribs, trapped in the side rail that moves up and down to allow parents to lift a child from the crib more easily.
As cribs are handed down from friends to friends, even from one generation to the next, it is that drop side rail that is becoming the bigger issue. Many child safety advocates say it's time to get rid of the drop-side design all-together.
"Drop side cribs, because of the amount of hardware that's involved, because it weakens the structure of the crib itself have been involved in numerous deaths and injuries, crib failures where the side may come loose or come off," said Nancy Cowels, with Kids in Danger.
The CPSC agrees crib safety has become a major concern with more than 5 million cribs, made by various manufacturers, recalled over the past two years. For more information, (click here).
