Wayland Baptist's rapidly growing athletics program will add Competitive Cheer and Dance Programs for men and women beginning in the fall of 2010.
According to Dr. Greg Feris, WBU Director of Athletics, the new programs, with anticipated squads of 18 to 20, will have the same opportunities that other Wayland athletes currently benefit from, including scholarships, a full-time coach, ready access to sports medicine personnel, and funding for travel and competition.
"It's exciting to think about the added support, competition and entertainment value these two squads will add to our traditional sports offerings."
Cheer and Dance programs are not currently recognized by the NAIA or NCAA, but Feris believes that it is only a matter of time before there are nationally sanctioned competitions sponsored by these national governing bodies.
"Meanwhile, the National Association of Cheer and Dance takes up the slack in these areas with state, regional and national competitions."
Feris adds that a recruiting strategy for the new Wayland programs will be initiated immediately and a coach hired sometime early next year.
