LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Black Friday is just a few days away, which means people are on the prowl for those hot Christmas must haves. NewsChannel 11 took a look and found some unusual places to get discounted deals and big bargains, but the question is, are you willing to pay the price for pawning.
That's right, pawn shops. There's more than a dozen in town.
"We go with our Grandpa because you can find really good deals here and they're still the same quality," said 13-year-old Alexa Holmes. The Holmes family goes to pawn shops all the time to save.
"I've bought movies before, I've bought video games just because their cheaper here," said Alexa's brother Austin Holmes.
Xbox games for $3, flat screen TV's for a couple hundred, gaming consoles, Tom Toms, IPods, Iphones, cameras... all the hottest items you want for the holidays while saving hundreds.
"As they get closer to Christmas is usually when we see an increase in our sales. We do get some people that come in and sell their items and purchase something nicer," said Cash America Pawn Market Manager Robert Solorio.
Many pawn shops have layaway plans like most retail stores you're used to shopping at.
"Many people will come in probably 3 or 4 months before Christmas and start their shopping and putting things away so they can get it out for Christmas," said Solorio.
Music to your ears ...but not to those pawning in their stuff.
"I could pay for a ring for $500.00 dollars and then pawn it and I'll be lucky if I get $150 out of it," said pawn shop shopper Elvira Montes.
It's the price of pawning. Quick cash for those pawning, turns into savings for those buying.
"You can find good prices but if you're going to pawn something you're not getting a good deal," said Montes.
Some pawn shop regulars say the best thing to do is compare the pawn shop's prices with deals online before buying anything. Many of the pawn shops around town will also be having holiday sales like retail stores during Black Friday.
