A controlled burn resulted in thick black smoke seen over North Lubbock

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Firefighters from New Deal and Shallowater responded to a grass fire Wednesday afternoon that threatened two homes. The fire began around the 2600 block of Immaculate Ave. just west of the Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport.

Firefighters say what started out as a controlled burn, ended up destroying several vehicles which caused the thick black smoke that was seen in North Lubbock.

Captain Brad Murph with the New Deal Fire Department explained, "What I saw when I pulled in, flames were fully engulfed and cars were on fire. Around the other side, it was up around the fence line."

Captain Murph says that the area is very dry outside and advises that if you burn anything, that you need to be very cautious.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.  NewsChannel 11 was told that a man in the area was burning paper.  No one was injured.
