LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech defensive end Brandon Sharpe (Lyons, Ga.) was named the Co-Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in the Red Raiders' 20-13 win over Baylor at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. The honor is the second of the season for Sharpe, who earned the honor following his four-sack performance at Nebraska in October.
Sharpe recorded his 14th and 15th sacks of the season in the win over the Bears and made possibly the biggest defensive play of the game late in the fourth quarter. With Tech leading 20-13 and Baylor inside the Red Raiders' 10-yard line, BU quarterback Blake Szymanski ran a keeper up the middle, but Sharpe met him at the line of scrimmage and forced a fourth-down play, which Tech stopped.
The senior first-year starter posted two sacks in the first five games of the season, before exploding for 13 in seven conference games. His 15 sacks rank second nationally and Texas Tech as a team ranks second nationally with a school-record tying 40 sacks. Sharpe also broke the single-season school record in sacks, snapping the previous mark of 14, set by Adell Duckett in 2003.
The Red Raiders finished the regular season with an 8-4 record, 5-3 in conference play, and await the annual post-season bowl announcement Sunday afternoon.
