LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – The search continues Wednesday night for a man deputies say broke into a home in Lubbock County and shot a man in broad daylight just after 1 p.m. The victim, 37-year-old Travis Johnson is home from the hospital after suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.
Deputies say Johnson returned home from running an errand Wednesday afternoon when he realized there was someone inside his house. "When we get a call that shots were fired we never know what we are going into," says Chief Deputy Cody Scott.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a call placed by the victim and he told the dispatcher that someone broke into his house in broad daylight and that he'd been shot. "Evidently he had been running an errand and upon entry into house is when he realized someone else was in the residence," says Scott about the investigation.
Kristi Florence didn't hear the gun shots and says she saw her neighbor right before this happened."I was walking in from backyard and waved at him and came on in the house," says Florence.
Upon entry, deputies discovered Johnson had been shot in the leg. "The sheriffs they had all shotguns out going into the house as if someone was in there," says Florence about what she saw. Startled by the sirens she didn't know what to think. "After they secured the house they started looking around the neighborhood and we gave them permission to search our backyard because we have open sheds and we wanted to make sure he hadn't jumped the fence," she says about the investigation.
With the help of k-9 dogs deputies set up a perimeter and canvassed the neighborhood searching for the suspect. Johnson provided investigators with a description of the man he says was in his house. "He was described as a Hispanic male wearing a blue-green jacket, a multi-color hat and had on blue jeans," says Scott. Deputies don't believe the attempted burglar made away with anything.
They are still investigated this crime. They are searching for a late model 2-door silver Honda that they believe the suspect fled the scene in.
