LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Breastfeeding may help protect women from developing metabolic syndrome, which is a condition linked to heart disease and diabetes. It's unclear why that may be protective for the mom, but Kaiser Permanente Researchers have found breastfeeding a child lowers the risk for metabolic syndrome by 40 to 56%.
The benefit was even greater among women who had gestational diabetes while pregnant. For them, breast feeding gives them up to an 86 percent reduced risk. Metabolic syndrome is actually a cluster of risk factors related to heart disease and diabetes, like high blood pressure and cholesterol.
