Updated: Gas line explosion near New Deal injures one

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Just after 3 p.m., a gas line explosion occurred just northeast of New Deal at FM 2902 and CR 5400.

According to officials, a contractor hired by Agri-Tex was digging a gas line when another gas line was hit. The victim suffered first and second degree burns on his face and neck and first degree burns on his hands.

The New Deal Fire Department, Lubbock Sheriff's Department, and Abernathy Fire Department all responded to the industrial accident.

"There was some sort of spark - that's the only thing we can figure ignited the gas that was pressurized in the line they had it shut off evidently some bled off though," said Capt. Brad Murph with the New Deal Fire Department.

The spark caused a flash fire burning the victim's hands and face, but he was taken to the University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
