Paired kidney exchange changes lives across the country

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – There are more ways to give the gift of life, an exchange program Thursday at Pennsylvania's Harrisburg Hospital involving kidneys and two surgeries has the potential to save five times as many lives.

It's called the paired kidney exchange and you'll find it on the website of the National Kidney Registry. It links donors and recipients who are not compatible with each other, to people who are compatible across the country. So, it allows the donors to give and those in need to receive a kidney, but not from the person they had paired with at first.  Even better, this paired exchange works like dominos.

In the case Thursday, there are actually 20 people involved, ten donors and ten recipients.  All of them are scheduled for surgery within the next few days.  Meanwhile, there are about 100,000 people on the registry right now waiting for a kidney.
