Hale County completes obligations after 2006 voting violations

By James Clark | email

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Hale County will no longer be under federal court supervision for voting rights violations as of December 31st.

In 2006, Hale County was accused of not complying with the Voting Rights Act due to a lack of Spanish speaking election workers.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a notice with the U.S. District Court in Lubbock saying a consent decree was set to expire and would not be renewed. The two sides accepted a consent decree, and the latest court records say Hale County successfully followed the decree.

Court records also say the Justice Department has talked to Hale County officials about continuing to comply with the Voting Rights Act.
