LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – If bikes, skates, skateboards, and scooters are on your child's Christmas list, don't forget to buy the helmet along with it. That's strong advice from the physicians of the Texas Medical Association or TMA.
They say bike riding is a great way for anybody to get healthy, and adding a helmet is the best way to make sure you stay safe while getting fit and having fun. The doctors say it's not enough to just buy a helmet, parents need to make sure kids are wearing them properly, because a properly fitted helmet can prevent up to 85% of serious head injuries.
For the best fit, a safety helmet should be snug over the child's forehead, usually about an inch above the eyebrows with the chin strap snug. Since1994, TMA has given away more than 60,000 helmets to kids in its "Hard Hats for Kids" program.
Remember kids grow out of helmets, so parents are urged to check their child's helmet to make sure that it still fits properly as your kid grows.
