LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Thanks the generosity of folks across the South Plains, hundreds of kids received their Christmas gifts a little early Sunday at the Christmas is for Kids Toy give away party.
"These kids would not have Christmas otherwise," said Shawn Vandygriff with Child Protective Services.
Kids spent the afternoon eating, laughing, taking pictures on Santa's lap, and just enjoying the holidays. However, many would not have any toys to open on Christmas if it weren't for the Christmas is for Kids campaign that CPS holds every year in Lubbock.
Last year they provided Christmas for 600 kids, and they expect to serve almost that many this year. Each child at the party got three gifts to take home and put under their Christmas tree.
Donya Barner has three little girls. She bought them clothes, but this will give them something else to open. "Seeing my twins open up thier gifts for the first time," is what she thinks the best part of Christmas will be.
Barner says CPS gave her much more than toys this year. They helped her get sober so she could reunite her family. "A lot of people look at CPS as being a bad thing, and as long as I was out there living that kind of life I though the same thing, but today I know that CPS there to help," she said.
"To know that we can provide these families with Christmas, so that when they wake up Christmas morning they have something to unwrap is huge," said Vandygriff. "It's been a struggle, but this year we're going to have a good Christmas," said Barner.
CPS will leave their donation buckets out at area McDonald's until Tuesday because they get calls to help provide Christmas up until the big day.
