LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - One person died and 2 others suffered injuries after a bad accident between a car and an 18-wheeler at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and the Slaton Highway around 2:45 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators say the accident killed 24-year-old Bernardo Castillo.  The black Chevy Cobalt he was riding in traveling Southeast on the Slaton Highway failed to yield the right-of-way when they turned left onto the South Loop 289 access road. The 18-wheeler hit the car driving it into a pole.  "I knew when he started moving, as close as the truck was coming. The speed limit here is 55, and I knew it was going to happen before it ever did. I just grabbed a hold," said Dayne Wood who witnessed the accident.

The driver of the semi, 46-year-old Dorothy Cook, and her child who was also in the truck were not injured.

EMS transported the driver of the car, 26-year-old Carlos Hernandez to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, but the two passengers in the car were not as lucky. "The back passenger has been pronounced deceased in the Cobalt, and the front passenger is still being treated at this time, but in critical condition," said Sgt. J. Taveau at the accident scene.

The passenger in the front seat, 24-year-old Monica Beruman is still at UMC with serious injuries.

Police believe all three of the people in the Cobalt are from Mexico.
