LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - At perhaps the worst possible time, many Lubbock and South Plains residents have lost power.
Thursday morning at about 9:40 AM, Xcel Energy said, "It appears we have about 1,500 customers without power in the Lubbock/South Plains area at this time." Temperatures were generally in the lower 20's at the time of the power loss, with sustained winds of 30 miles per hour or more. Without power, many residents cannot run their furnace or heater. Xcel also says, "Hopefully the wind will moderate this afternoon and we can get most of these customers restored before dark if not sooner."
City officials tell NewsChannel 11 that the city will work with the Red Cross to set up a shelter if needed.
Update: As of 7 p.m. Thursday, officials at Xcel Energy told NewsChannel 11 that less than 15 homes remain without power and all power is expected to be restored sometime Thursday night.
