Holiday travel safety tips

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - While the weather should be better for folks traveling now than it was before Christmas, it's still a busy time on the roads.

The Texas Department of Public Safety will increase patrols during this busy time of year. They ask drivers to be patient and give themselves plenty of time to get to their destinations.

Covenant Health System also offers some safe driving tips. They say you should keep a winter safety kit in your car with items such as tow rope, jumper cables, flashlights, blankets, and an ice scraper.

They also say you should know who to call if anything happens. "Map out the counties that you're traveling through and put those Sheriff's Departments numbers in your phone just in case anything happens on the road. Also, put the numbers for road conditions. Those are just simple things you can do before you leave the house, and they'll save you a lot of heartache if something occurs on the road," said Covenant Health Systems Public Information Officer, Holly Kennedy.

They also suggest you give yourself plenty of time and bring a travel size bottle of hand sanitizer if you plan to travel by air.
