The City of Lubbock Health Department has received the first confirmed human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) for 2010 in Lubbock County. Last year Lubbock County had no confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus.

The Buddy Holly Statue has been moved. Workers moved the statue and the plaques on the West Texas Walk of Fame Friday morning to demolish a long-broken fountain at 7th Street and Avenue Q.

The death penalty portion of a Lubbock capital murder case is overturned by U.S. District Court Judge Sam Cummings. In an opinion and ruling Thursday, Cummings wrote that Michael Yowell had been denied both due process and effective assistance of counsel.

Justin Joe Casarez, 22, of Lamesa, was sentenced Friday morning to 121 months in federal prison, to be followed by a 25-year term of supervised release, for receiving child pornography. Following the sentencing, Judge Cummings remanded Casarez to the custody of the U.S. Marshal.
