Father admits to critically injuring infant

By Tiffany Pelt - email

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - An 8-week old infant is in critical condition at UMC after sustaining serious head injuries Monday evening. Father Mark Helm admitted to Lubbock Police that he was responsible for the injuries, and today mother of the infant Jennifer Wampler filed for a child protective order against him.

Lubbock investigators say Wampler went out with friends Monday night and left her two-month-old daughter Madyson Wampler with her boyfriend and infants father Mark Helm.

When Wampler returned home, she noticed Madyson had serious head injuries and rushed her to UMC. Investigators say the family told medical personnel the infant had fallen. However, UMC contacted LPD and Child Protective Services saying the injuries were not consistent with the story.

After LPD and Child Protective Services arrived early Tuesday morning, Helm admitted to injuring the infant. He was then arrested and charged with injury to a child, a first degree felony.

Helm was released Wednesday but CPS and LPD say they're still investigating the case. Madyson remains at UMC with a fractured skull. We'll keep you updated on the details of this case.
